Description
Chromosome 21 is the smallest of the human chromosomes, consisting of approximately 48 million base pairs. It represents about 1.5 to 2 percent of the total DNA in human cells. It is an autosome, meaning it’s not a sex chromosome. Aneuploidy (an abnormal number of chromosomes) of chromosome 21, specifically having three copies instead of two, is the genetic cause of Down syndrome.
