Ascitic fluid cytology

The test examines the cells present in ascitic fluid to investigate the cause of ascites, such as liver cirrhosis, heart failure, infections and cancers such as ovarian, gastrointestinal and metastatic cancers. This test indicates advanced-stage cancer or peritoneal carcinomatosis – cancer spreading to the peritoneum (thin layer of tissue lining the abdomen).
